What Is Botox and how does it work

What is Botox

Botox is a well known brand name for the neurotoxic protein known as botulinum toxin.

Botulinum toxin (Botox) is made by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and in large quantities the toxin causes botulism, a rare paralytic illness sometimes associated with food poisoning.

Regardless of this Botox is frequently used in cosmetic medicine in controlled doses to treat moderate to severe brow furrowing  (glabellar lines, frown lines or forehead wrinkles), uncontrolled blinking, lazy eye, wrinkles, and other facial creases. Use in cosmetic medicine call for a small amount of diluted botulinum toxin to be used enabling a skilled surgeon to efect a controlled weakening of muscle activity.

Botulinum toxin is sold using the brand names Botox, BTXA, Dysport, Myobloc, Neurobloc, Xeomin, Botox Cosmetic, and Vistabel.

Botox is not only used in cosmetic medicine but also is effective in treating cervical dystonia, writer's cramp, excessive sweating, achalasia, chronic pain, neuropathy, and migraine headaches. Botox has also benn found to be effective in treating overactive bladder problems asl well as enlarged prostates.

Some recent research have shown positive results wherein Botox used for aesthetic purposes can sometimes assist in the recovery of some persons with mental illness. A recent study published found that treating some clinically depressed patients with Botox on the frown lines of their faces contributed in a major way to the removal of their depression.
