Overview of Neck Lift Cosmetic Surgery

The double chin or turkey gobbler neck is a common problem. We need to determine whether the problem is due to too much fat, too much skin or due to neck banding. Indeed often it is a combination of the various components. Excess fat can be removed by liposuction. Liposuction and mini neck lift are often combined in the younger patient to correct a double chin, which is due to family genes, not from being overweight.

Once fat cells are removed by liposuction, they can never return.

Excess skin can be removed either by a mini neck lift, or by formal lower facelift. The mini neck lift pulls the neck skin in using hidden sutures.

Under the skin of the neck is a thin sheet of muscle called the Platysma. As we age the left and right sides tend to separate in the middle under the chin and lose tone. This is more noticeable in thinner patients. The correction needed here is to stitch the free edges of the muscle together and tighten them so that the banding is reduced or eliminated.

Finally a chin implant will often improve the neckline in patients with a weak chin.
