Are the facelift incisions visible?

All facelift operations require some sort of incisions. Small incision facelift using an endoscopic approach uses only a few small incisions in the hairline and these are very hard to find. The hairdresser may identify them initially but after some months when any wounds fade they virtually vanish. Small incision facelift essentially applies to the mid face and is not able to help patients with heavy necks and jowling, as these patients may require skin excision. When patients require skin excision longer incisions are needed to permit removal of the bunched skin, which appears as the face is lifted. Sometimes incisions behind the ears will become a little more noticeable as people don't heal as finely in that area. Sometimes medicines are used to help reduce the size of this incision and on occasion the incision will need to be revised subsequently.

How long does facelift last?

The body continues to age after facelift surgery. It is inevitable that there will be some further aging changes over time. Dissection facelifts last much longer than suture only facelifts, as the tissues are physically moved up and heal in a new position. Generally patients will always appear younger throughout their life than if they had not had the surgery. Many people comment that they look 5 to 10 years younger after facelift surgery as an average figure. Some patients can have revision surgery years later in order to maintain their improvement.
Suture facelifts rely on the stitching to hold the tissues up. It is unknown how long suture facelifts will last as they are a newer concept and the technique continues to evolve.

Is it painful?

Facelift surgery can be mildly sore and some patients complain of feeling tight. This is often worse in the first few days as the swelling increases. In general though most patients do not describe this as a very painful operation.

Is facelift a very common operation?

Facelift is one of the fastest growing cosmetic operations. This appears to be a combination of increased community acceptance, increased safety and the range of options. There are smaller facelifts, which have been popular in the younger age group looking to make early interventions, as well as the more standard facelifts which are carried out in 40 to 60 year old age bracket, which provides a strong long lasting lift. These operations are more popular now than ever.

When can I return to work after facelift?

Most patients find that for one week they do require to rest at home. There will be swelling and bruising during that time. A few patients can return to social life at a week but most patients will wait 10 to 14 days before returning to work. Some patients will prefer to wait longer. Patients who are able to wear their hair over the ears are able to camouflage the wounds better. The use of a scarf or a hat can be an aid. The use of sunglasses can cover up any treatments around the eyes. There is a limitation after facelift/neck lift in turning the head for three weeks. This may affect some activities and patient's need to take care when driving a car. Reversing the car, which requires turning the head, can be a little uncomfortable for a few weeks.

The relentless pull of gravity produces sagging and drooping of the skin and the underlying fat. Facial aging is also genetically determined and influenced by other factors such as sun exposure, smoking, weight fluctuations and the stresses of daily life. Enlarge image
