Surgical ProceduresRhinoplasty (Nose)Post opInitially you will be closely supervised in the recovery ward. When you are fully alert, you will be transferred to your private room. If you have nasal packing, it will be removed after a few hours or sometimes on the following day. Dependent upon your surgeon’s advice and your personal needs, you may return to your home under the supervised care of a family member or friend or remain in the hospital over night. The recovery week involves resting and avoidance of any exercise or strenuous activities. Most patients will bruise a little. You will be encouraged to keep your head elevated for several days, and to use cold compresses or ice-packs to reduce swelling and bruising. Swelling often peaks on about the second or third day then subsides. Most patients are surprised at how little pain usually accompanies this surgery. Pain medication is prescribed, although it is usually not necessary. Antibiotics will be given for 1 week postoperatively. The plaster is removed at a week, as are any stitches and splint. There may be mild bruising and swelling which lasts for one to two weeks. A subtle degree of swelling will remain for several months. Internal swelling and dry blood and mucous may block the airway. You may be encouraged to use nasal decongestants or saltwater douches for several weeks. This will help clear the airway and is essential for faster healing. Most patients are back at work in 1 to 2 weeks, and wearing glasses at 3 weeks. They may drive a car and return to work or social activities after one to two weeks. Moderate physical exercise is avoided for three weeks after surgery. Contact sports should be avoided for 3 months. We organise a series of routine postoperative visits: at 1 week, 6 weeks then 3 months. CASESTUDYRhinoplastyRhinoplasty is the medical term for reshaping of the nose.
